Want to build a single speed without having to buy a dedicated frame? Try the Melvin. The Melvin bolts to the frame where the rear derailleur would normally go and allows the use of a single speed rear wheel on bikes with vertical dropouts.
The Melvin uses two pulleys, just like a rear derailleur, which gives it 20 teeth of chain wrap. This means that the Melvin will work with multiple front chain rings while maintaining proper chain tension. Of course this is no longer a true single speed, but can come in handy when two or three gears are all you need. Twenty teeth of chain wrap means that chain rings with a maximum difference of twenty teeth can be used up front.

The Moon Unit has a raised boss for the brake cable clamp that makes setup easy and ensures cable security. The Short Pull Neo-Retro is a wide-profile cantilever brake with a design based on the geometry of the famous Mafac Tandem brake. Where the Neo-Retro differs from its classic heritage is in its modern materials and adjustability.
The arms of the Neo-Retro are machined from lightweight 6061 aluminum. Their T-shaped cross section prevents the brake from flexing too much under load.
The brake pads mount to slots in the arms that allow for vertical positioning. The toe-in and angle can be fine-tuned thanks to the spherical washers on the brake pad threaded posts.
The long arms give the Neo-Retro lots of mechanical advantage and supreme mud clearance. However, for smaller frames and those with panniers, we will often recommend our narrower Touring Canti brake.
Like all of Paul brakes, the Neo-Retro has a sealed pivot mechanism. Rubber seals and a stainless steel bushing keep the brake arms turning smoothly no matter what you’re riding through. The Rack Adapter is a threaded mount for attaching front or rear racks directly to Paul brake pivots.

As with all aluminum seatposts, it’s a good idea to periodically pull the post out of the frame, clean it, apply a thick coat of grease inside the seat-tube of the frame, and re-install. These easily transform bar-end (aka barcon or TT) shifters into thumb shifters.The Microshift shifters are not included, but are readily available in 8 through 12-speed, Shimano and SRAM versions, and many have an option for friction-shifting. These mounts are also compatible with the Microshift Alfine/Nexus 8-speed shifter (part #BS-N08). Be sure you are using the MTB Microshift (or Gevenalle) model, as the Road version is smaller and will not fit properly.

The Short Pull Touring Canti is a powerful cantilever brake with a similar design to the Neo-Retro, but with the arms angled upward. This gives the brake a much narrower profile without significantly reducing stopping power.
The narrower profile of the Touring Canti can be desirable if you’re riding with large panniers or if your current brakes don’t give you enough heel or calf clearance.
