The challenge was thus: Build a serious steel bike and give it only the attributes that matter most. Make it quick and comfortable on pavement, as well as confident and compliant on degraded surfaces. What the Enginerds put forth is Preamble, a pavement and gravel utility worker that proves you don’t need to cut corners or clip coupons to make a more affordable steel bike. Preamble can run racks and fenders and carry a couple water bottles. Surly was raised on stealing basic cable, after all. Ever since the birth of the first Straggler it has been blazing trails and kicking up dust in the gravel world.

The new Straggler is for the rider who sees challenges, not obstacles. Someone who embraces the ethos of the Straggler and is excited to see it do more. Someone eager to push the boundaries of exploration with a "do-it-all" gravel bike that's equally comfortable on- and off-road.
It utilises the same dropouts and brake mounts as the current Midnight Special, along with thru-axles and flat-mount brakes for more performance-oriented riding where stability prevails.

- Lowered seat tube for greater travel windows on dropper posts
- Sloped top tube to improve standover height for riders with shorter inseams
